Malnutrition devastates 1 in 4 children

July 16th, 2011

One out of every four children in Honduras suffers from chronic malnutrition. That means approximately 240,000 children have organ deficiencies due to lack of food. The World Food Program said these sad statistics make Honduras the Central American country with the second highest number of children suffering from malnutrition.

When a child does not receive proper nourishment at a young age, he often appears gaunt and thin. However, it is not just weight that is an issue. More importantly, his brain and organs are being damaged. Malnutrition within the first two years of life can cause irreversible harm, according to our on-staff doctors.

Although POI cannot reach all 240,000 children, we can offer hope to some with your help. Each child that attends our tutoring program receives a medical examination by an on-staff physician who maps out a diet plan to counter the malnutrition. The children receive vital nutrients and supplements each day that quickly show results.

By sponsoring a child for $30 a month, you provide a healthy meal to prevent the damage malnutrition causes to the brain and organs. Partner with us to save a child from becoming another malnutrition statistic. When you do this, remember you are doing it unto the Lord Jesus, who said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink… Whatever you did to the least of these, you did it for me.” Matthew 25:35, 40
